Prior to commencing instructor training, a pre-entry examination is required to verify the applicant’s basic ability to provide pilot training.

In general, instructor training is a course to acquire and deepen the ability to teach other pilots to fly and it is assumed that the candidate is already capable of operating an aircraft independently and safely.

The pre-entry examination is approximately 1 flight hour with an instructor. The pre-examination must be completed no more than 6 months before the start of the instructor training.

For holders of an FI(H) or FI(As) helicopter instructor rating, 55 hours of the 100 hours of theoretical instruction requirement will be credited.

Flight instructor training consists of:

  • Completion of a theoretical instructor course of 100 hours of which 10 hours in the classroom and 90 hours of self-study.
  • 25 hours of pedagogical lessons in the classroom or on the plane.
  • A total of 30 hours of flight instruction in the aircraft, 25 hours with an instructor and 5 hours with another student.
  • Final exam on theoretical knowledge in the training organization.
  • Final examination with the CAA examiner.
