Instrument Flight Training - IR(A)

Overview of training for instrument rating

Nowadays, there are several IFR ratings and training courses that you can use for instrument flying. The greatest recent change is the replacement of the Enroute IFR – EIR(A) training by the Basic IR – BIR(A) training.

IR(A) Instrument Rating

Full instrument rating with all privileges for instrument flying. You need this rating if you will be flying commercial flights, commercial transport flights and HPA flights (turboprop and jet aircraft).

This qualification is according to the ICAO standards and is valid worldwide. Training includes 50 hours of flying and 150 hours of theory. With an intensive approach, the training can be completed in 2 months.

Entry requirements

You must meet the following requirements before you can start training:

Requirements for IR(A)

To obtain the rating, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Qualify for a night endorsement (if you want to fly IFR at night)
  • Obtain an Aviation Medical Licence Class 1 or Class 2 with tonal audiometry
  • Complete the IR Theory Course
  • Complete 50 hours of practical training of which up to 35 hours may be in a flight simulator
  • Pass a theoretical examination in 7 subjects at the CAA
  • Pass a practical test with a CAA inspector

Theoretical training

The theoretical training can be completed by attending a group IR theory course or individually.

Minimum theory:
150 h

Examination at the CAA

The IR exam consists of 7 subjects in English. The entire database contains approximately 8000 questions.

The practical training consists of:

Flight Simulator:

Aircraft:

In total:
50

  • 35 hours in a simulator with Garmin 1000
  • 15 hours in Cessna 172 SP G1000 aircraft
  • 60 IR instructor hours

Competency based CB IR(A)

This form of training is suitable if you have already flown IFR hours with an instructor outside your ATO (typically aircraft owners) or if you are requesting conversion of your IR endorsement to EASA.

The advantage is that with this type of training you can take the easier theoretical exam at the CAA in the EIR/CB IR range. However, for this exam you will be restricted to IFR flights with piston aircraft only. This restriction can then be removed later by passing the full IR exam.

Basic BIR(A)

A new qualification that is valid only in EASA Member States. This rating entitles the holder to fly IFR on non-commercial flights only and increases the holder’s visibility minima for making an approach to 1 500 m and decision height + 200 ft above the published airport minima.

The advantage is again a slightly easier theoretical exam at the CAA and the extent of the practical part is according to the applicant’s ability to handle the aircraft safely in IFR flight (no minimum hours are defined).

IR(A) course

This course provides maximum tutorial hours with lecturers and a personal touch. The course will provide you with excellent preparation for the CAA exams in 7 compulsory subjects. It consists of 56 hours of lectures and 60 hours of practical exercises with explanation of question, which you will later take at the CAA.

We believe that face-to-face tuition is the best way to share experience and knowledge as a part of your IR(A) studies, so you will complete 116 hours of classroom teaching and tutorials with experienced lecturers as a part of the course.

The price is final and no VAT is charged.

If you continue your practical training at our flight school, we will refund some of this amount to your flying credit:

  • In the case of IR(A) training, a credit of 370 €.

The course includes:

56 hours of lectures

For each of the 7 IR(A) subjects, a classroom lecture of approximately 8 hours (one day) is planned. The lecture includes a summary and explanation of the important knowledge you need to know to pass the exams.

60 hours of training and guidance

The lecture is followed by a more detailed explanation of the more complex subject matter and a practice of sample questions. Lecturers are also available for ongoing consultations during this module.

You will receive a lot of study materials

During the lectures and trainings you will receive many study materials from the lecturers that you can use in your studies, including access to the eLearning portal of the flight school.

The theoretical IR(A) course can also be taken with an individual schedule of 15 hours of instruction at a price of 1 200 €.

Great practice for future pilots

We only fly aircraft equipped with Garmin 1000

Nowadays there is a clear trend for newer aircraft after 2010 to be equipped with screen-only systems and this will only improve in the future.

The most common system on general aviation aircraft is the Garmin 1000. This system significantly reduces the pilot’s workload and allows efficient monitoring and flight planning. It provides the pilot with a much broader situational awareness compared to conventional instruments and we can only recommend it for the IFR training.

Enjoy IFR training on modern aircraft

The recently purchased Garmin 1000 equipped Cessna SP is a great and economical aircraft for the IR training.

IFR training is also recommended in this very modern aircraft equipped with a diesel engine and automatically adjustable propeller.

You can also take the IFR training on a Cirrus SR22 aircraft, if you wish. The condition is to be retrained on this aircraft for VFR before starting the IR training.

Flight simulator

We use the Piper Meridian simulator for the training

An exceptional simulator at an affordable price, equipped with Garmin 1000 avionics and certified as FNPT II for IFR flight training. In addition, the simulator is completely realistic and you will enjoy flying it very much.

The PA 46 simulator is located at the airport in Kunovice. We take its location 300 km from Prague as an advantage, because we train here 2-3 days when you can fully devote yourself to flying without stress from other duties and the instructor is fully available to you all the time. Of course, the IFR flight to Kunovice and back is a part of the training.
