Why does this course make sense for you?

  • Because in a real emergency, there won't be time to study a checklist.
  • Because the hardest part isn't pulling the handle - it's deciding in time.
  • Because many pilots fly aircraft with a parachute system but have never actually practised using it.
  • Because you'll try situations that can't be safely trained in a real aircraft.
  • Because your instructor probably never showed you how to use this system correctly.
Cirrus airframe parachute system (CAPS) activation handle

This course introduces the latest thinking on the parachute system, and teaches you to use it correctly and in time

It answers questions like:

  • In which situations should you use the parachute system?
  • The concept behind the rescue system, and how it was designed to work.
  • Once you've used the parachute, what should you expect?
  • The steps involved in activating the parachute system.

What we'll practise on the simulator

  • Engine failure after take-off: continue, land, or use the parachute?
  • Engine failure in cruise: how much time do you have, and how do you decide?
  • Disorientation / loss of control: when do you stop waiting?
  • Situations where using the parachute is immediately obvious.
  • Situations where you need to quickly weigh altitude, terrain, weather and crew.

This course is ideal for

  • UL pilots flying aircraft with a ballistic rescue system,
  • pilots of PS-28, Bristell, VL3 and other parachute-equipped aircraft,
  • pilots of Cirrus SR20 / SR22,
  • aircraft owners and operators,
  • pilots who fly with family or friends on board,
  • instructors who want a firmer grasp of the topic themselves.

After the course, you'll know

  • when to use the parachute immediately,
  • when there's still time to weigh up your options,
  • what steps to take before activation,
  • what to expect after the system activates,
  • how to communicate with your crew,
  • how to set your own mental threshold for the decision.

Don't wait for the real thing

A parachute system is most valuable the moment a pilot knows exactly when and how to use it.

Come and try it before you'd ever have to deal with it for real.

Frequently asked questions about the course

No, the course makes sense for any pilot flying an aircraft with a rescue parachute system.

Yes, the decision-making principles are just as useful for pilots of UL aircraft with a ballistic system.

Yes - the goal is to practise the whole procedure in a safe environment.

The course runs 4 hours in total, 3 of which are on the simulator.
