A shorter path to your licence
The LAPL(A) licence lets you fly aircraft up to two tonnes with up to four people on board - Cessna 172, Cirrus SR22 and similar. Compared with the PPL(A), it takes only 30 flight hours and has lower medical requirements.

LAPL(A) is a newer type of licence introduced by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency, EASA. It is not a licence for ultralight aircraft - it lets you fly general aviation aircraft up to a maximum take-off weight of 2 tonnes, with up to four people on board.
Compared with the PPL(A) licence, you only need 30 hours of training instead of 45, and the medical examination has lower requirements. These are the two main reasons people choose LAPL(A) - it's more than enough for flying around Europe for your own enjoyment.
The licence can be further extended with a night rating and the LAPL(A) instructor qualification. Other ratings, such as multi-engine aircraft or instrument flying (IR), cannot be added to it - and the licence is valid only within European Union states. If you're planning to fly outside Europe or continue towards professional training, let us know and we'll go through whether the PPL(A) might make more sense for you.

There are no requirements to start light aircraft pilot training.
During the course, you will need to obtain:
To obtain the LAPL(A) light aircraft pilot licence, you must be at least 17 years old. Training can therefore start as early as age 16. There is no upper age limit - the only requirement is a medical examination by an Aeromedical Examiner. We've had students successfully obtain their pilot licence with us well into their sixties.
Pilot training includes 30 hours of practical flight training, 50 hours of classroom theory and 50 hours of self-study. This can vary between students. Training concludes with a theoretical and a practical exam.
You can start flight training right away and complete the full pilot theory course later, alongside your flying.
Before your first solo flight, you need to complete a medical examination by an Aeromedical Examiner. There's no need to worry about it - most people have no trouble with it at all. Glasses or dental fillings are certainly not an obstacle to obtaining medical fitness to fly these aircraft.
This is not a licence for ultralight aircraft. This qualification lets you fly general aviation aircraft, such as the Cessna 150/172, Cirrus SR22 and others, with a maximum take-off weight of up to 2 tonnes and no more than 4 passengers on board.
The advantage of this licence is that, compared with the PPL(A), it requires only 30 hours of flight training and has lower medical requirements for pilots.
The licence can be further extended with a night rating and the LAPL(A) instructor qualification. Other ratings (multi-engine aircraft, IR, etc.) cannot be added to this qualification. The licence is valid only within European Union states.
Holders of a ULL(A) licence can obtain this qualification (depending on flight experience) with as little as 15 hours of flight time and the LAPL(A) Pilot Theory Course.
The licence stays valid based on your recent flight hours and, where required, a check flight with an examiner. Conditions vary by rating - we're happy to go through them with you at an information meeting.
