Course on procedural simulators

Garmin 1000 / NXi Avionics Course

Learn the avionics on the ground, not in flight. On a fully functional simulator, you'll go through everything Garmin can do - and in the air, you fly the aircraft, not the screens.

Do you really understand modern aircraft avionics?

In the air, a pilot should be one step ahead of the aircraft

A first flight in an aircraft fitted with Garmin 1000 or Perspective usually goes the same way: your whole mental capacity ends up focused on the screens. You're hunting for where things are, what it wants from you, and why it isn't doing the thing you want.

Learning the avionics in flight is the more expensive way

It sounds like a shortcut, but it means the pilot forgets to fly the aircraft and watch the traffic around them. If staying one step ahead of the aircraft matters to you, we don't recommend that route. An hour on the simulator is cheaper than an hour in the aircraft, and you get more done in it - you can repeat a procedure three times in a row without ever having to take off again.

What we do in the course

We'll explain the basic philosophy of the system and teach you to use everything it offers, intuitively and efficiently. After the course, you'll be able to answer other pilots' nosy questions with confidence.

We run Garmin 1000 conversion courses on individual dates to suit you, with an instructor dedicated to you alone. You can choose lessons focused on VFR flights only, or continue with the IFR extension.

Course syllabus

  • Explanation of each avionics system and how to use it
  • Working with the primary display. NAV, COM and radio navigation setup.
  • Navigation display, working with the flight plan.
  • Working with the autopilot. You'll try out how each mode works.
  • Emergency procedures
  • Practical exercise on the simulator
  • Working with navigation maps
  • Approach procedures - ILS, DME, NDB
  • Practical preparation of flight tasks
  • Effective cockpit management under IFR
  • Practical exercise on the simulator

What the course runs on

Our Garmin avionics simulators

These aren't toys with a picture of instruments. They are fully functional procedural simulators with the very same avionics you'll find in the aircraft.

Garmin 1000 / NXi simulator with GFC 700 autopilot

Try out every function of Garmin 1000 or the newer G1000 NXi on a fully functional simulator of this avionics suite. It includes every function found in the aircraft, without compromise - including SBAS/WAAS, LPV/LNAV, Synthetic Vision and Datalink simulation. Maps and settings are all up to date.

Garmin G3X simulator with GFC 500 autopilot

Garmin G3X simulator with GFC 500 autopilot

The same avionics you'll find in our Bristells and Tecnam - on the simulator you'll go through everything from COM and NAV setup to GFC 500 autopilot modes, including flight planning, approach procedures and emergency procedures that are hard to practise in flight.

Cirrus SR22 simulator with Perspective+ avionics

Cirrus SR22 simulator with Perspective+ avionics

A Cirrus cockpit with Perspective+ avionics and three projected views from the cockpit. Besides the avionics, you'll also practise scenarios for using the CAPS parachute rescue system - exactly the kind of thing you can't try in a real aircraft.

Course content

What you'll learn and how the course runs

We'll go in detail through the functions and controls of Garmin 1000 (Cessna, DA40) or Garmin Perspective (Cirrus). You'll try out operating and setting up the system on the simulator. We'll show you procedures for effective cockpit management and sample in-flight tasks.

Synthetic Vision, Terrain Awareness and Warning System

Synthetic Vision, Terrain Awareness and Warning System

How to react to a terrain proximity warning. When the warning triggers. How to use this system for a safe flight.

Traffic Avoidance System

Traffic Avoidance System

How serious each traffic conflict indication is and what the correct reaction is. The difference between TCAS and TAS.

Primary flight display

Primary flight display

We'll go through standard flight tasks, autopilot use and a few tricky parts of the setup.

Datalink

Datalink

How downloading current radar images works, using D-ATIS and online METARs. Options for making calls and sending texts in flight over the satellite phone.

Autopilot use

Autopilot use

Effective use of the autopilot in every available mode. How VNAV, FLC and Approach modes work.

SafeTaxi and airport maps

SafeTaxi and airport maps

You'll try out this aid for finding your way around airport taxiways, and using airport and approach charts.

Stormscope

Stormscope

How this system works and how much you can rely on the information. What does it actually show?

Infrared camera

Infrared camera

A few interesting details about this system and how to use it in flight and on approach.
